What is MCT oil
MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oils are kind of fat which is “medium” in length. They’re “medium” because they only have 6-10 carbon atoms. Since it is medium, it can skip pathways that “long” fat must go through in our body and release its energy immediately.
Many types of fat are “medium” in length since they have less than ten carbons in their chain.
The Different Types of MCTs
There are the four MCTs found in food:
Caproic Acid (C6)
Caproic acid convert in our body to ketones. Other MCTs also convert to ketones, but Caproic acid has the quickest conversion off all.
Caprylic Acid (C8)
This MCT is a potent antimicrobial that helps maintain stomach well-being.
Capric Acid (C10)
This is a less useful MCT. It has two extra carbons and therefore less processed a bit slower than less effective C8 and C6.
Lauric Acid (C12)
The last MCT that we can find in foods. Half of the fats found in coconut oil is lauric acid. Too much use of lauric acid may raise cholesterol levels like other long-chain saturated fats. The best MCT oil is the one that balance c8, c10, and c12.

Is the best MCT Oil Better than Coconut Oil?
Well, the short answer is – Yes.
MCT oil has medium chain triglycerides. My favorite MCT oil contains about 38% caprylic acid, about 31% capric acid and about 31% lauric acid. For comparison, coconut oil contains about 6% Caprylic acid, about 9% Capric acid and more than 50% Lauric acid. As mentioned above we prefer caprylic acid and capric acid because they take far fewer steps to convert to caloric energy. Since coconut oil contains less caprylic acid and capric acid, it is inferior to MCT oil.
MCT oil uses
MCT oil is a supplement often added to smoothies, bulletproof coffee, and salad dressings. You can use anywhere you’d use oil in food preparation. MCT has a neutral taste, so it blends with virtually anything.
I always start my day with a creamy bulletproof coffee. It’s super easy, just blend 1 tablespoon of butter, 1 tablespoon of natural flavor MCT oil and a cup of your favorite coffee. Because MCT oil is often flavorless (or has minimal flavor) it can easily be added or infused in salad dressings. Add a tablespoon or two instead of the original oil.
Put it in your pre-workout and post-workout shakes, add it to yogurt or cheese. Mix cocoa powder and MCT oil to produce yummy chocolate sauce (you can add stevia sweetener to add some extra sweetness).
Cooking and Baking
Since MCT oil, like coconut oil, will burn up if cooked over medium/high heat, I don’t recommend using it for cooking and baking. For cooking and baking at high temperatures, I use ghee or Lard. You can find my favorite ghee and lard here.

How to use MCT oil
I use 2-3 tablespoon per day. For beginners, I recommend starting with 1/2-1 per day for the first week. Later increase to 2 tablespoons per day for another week. 2 tablespoons per day is enough to get most of the benefits of MCT oil.
