Low Carb Chips

Low carb chips
Since starting my keto diet, I strangled to find ways to make low carb chips. Like most people, I love eating potato chips. Before starting my keto diet, I used to eat it on a daily basis. Although it is a primary resource for bad carbs, I just couldn't stop desiring it. Over the years I have found many ways to make low carb chips.

How can we make low carb chips?

While broiled or baked potatoes as has 20g of Carbohydrates per 100g deep fried potatoes has 30g of Carbohydrates per 100g, 50 percent more!

To get low carb chips we need to do two things, prevent the additional carbs added from the deep frying and replace the potatoes with low carb substitutes.

For the first mission, we will use an air fryer.

Unlike traditional frying method that uses hot oil to get a crispy layer around the food, Air fryer circulates hot air around the food to produce the crispy coating.

The air fryer coats the food in a thin layer of oil circulated by 400 °F heated air and uses 80% less oil than traditional frying.

Secondly, we should replace the high carb potatoes with low carb substitutes. There are many ingredients we can use. My favorites are Cheese, Zucchini, Cabbage, Radish, Cucumber, and Kale. My husband admires my low carb tortilla chips, made of almond flour.

Using air fryer to get low carb chips

I’m using NuWave Brio to prepare my low carb chips. In fact, I’m using it not only for low carb chips but also for all fried needed recipes. The NuWave Brio has an enclosed cooking chamber that keeps the heat inside. It is so easy and safe to use, that I allow my kids to use it even when they are alone. The NuWave Brio turns the heat off whenever you remove the basket, ensuring the user’s safety. It has a comfortable temperature control allowing us to choose a cooking temperature between 100°F and 400°F.
The NuWave Brio comes in two sizes 6-quart and 3-quart. With the 3-quart you will be able to prepare meals for 2 people, while the 6-quart can serve 4-5 people. Both sizes have an accessories kit, sold separately, which allows you to fry more items at one time by creating an additional shelf for the food items. The accessory kit doubles the cooking capabilities.
The NuWave Brio is perfect for frying vegetables, which makes delicious low carb chips. I just cut up any kind of vegetables, toss with a bit of kosher salt, pepper and olive oil. They taste amazing. It is also great for making French fries, falafels, chicken wings (20 minutes cooking produces s perfect crispy wings), etc.
It is also useful for reheating food. I use it to reheat slow-cooked short ribs leftovers. It comes out crispy and much tastier than microwave reheating. Like whiz, it is perfect for heating Fried Chicken and other keto meals. My none keto kids used it to reheat pizzas, sandwiches, and etc.
This excellent device has one con. Sometimes some food leftover sticks to the basket. When it happens I put it on the top rack of my dishwasher, it always comes clean and ready for the next challenge. Another way is to put wrap parchment paper on top of basket/grill. It is recommended to perforate the parchment paper with a dozen small holes/slits with a sharp knife before using it.

Air fryer low carb tortilla chips

This recipe is incredibly easy. Its “secret” is using low carb ingredients. I “combined” this recipe from two sources. The first is a YouTube video explaining how to prepper tortilla chips in an air fryer. This recipe is high with carbs since It uses regular tortillas. The second source makes a low carb tortilla chips using low carb tortillas and coconuts spry oil. In the video, they heat the tortillas in a microwave. I found out that the air fryer makes a much better job.

For this recipe, we will use Tumaro’s Grain with Chia wraps. Those wraps have only 60 calories and 5 net carbs. We will spray the tortillas with coconuts oil, Sprinkle salt and slice them into quarters. Then we will cook the wraps in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 8 minutes, shaking the chips once after 4 minutes. You can buy the wraps and the coconuts oil in most grocery stores, or buy it from Amazon using the following links.
